Tutorial: Diesel Particulate Filter DPF (Peugeot 407 HDI)

Maintenance of a DPF

You could see in the functioning of the DPF that its maintenance includes 2 interventions:

  1. Fill the reservoir with DPF additive (and reset the calculator)
  2. Clean the particle filter

Fill the reservoir with DPF additive

On the 407 HDI, full of additive is intended all 120000km. Full made 3L of additive which are charged about €100. Refuel of additive is not complicated, as you'll see below, but it requires big precautions and use of the diagnostic Peugeot suitcase.

The additive is indeed extremely dangerous. The safety instructions concerning provide long gloves, goggles and even a mask to filter the air breathed. Additive refill kit is totally thought so you absolutely do not have to touch the additive. It contains can fill with a valve cap and a hose to fitting to connect on the additive tank. The kit also contains a small canister of recycling to recover the surplus which could come out of the tank.

I d'ont know another car care product with so many safety instructions.

Note that there are several types of additives. Just ask the additive suitable for your car in your garage.

On 407 HDI, refuel from the DPF additive tank is done by the following procedure:

  • Choice, raise the left rear of the vehicle on candle or mount the 407 approximately 30 cm on a bridge arm.
  • Remove the left rear wheel
  • Tutorial 407 HDI - Fill the reservoir with DPF additiveTutorial 407 HDI - Fill the reservoir with DPF additiveBelow, you see the big diesel in black tank. On the left, you see a somewhat golden metal casing. This casing protects the DPF additive tank. There is no need to unmount this carter to fill the additive tank.
  • Tutorial 407 HDI - Fill the reservoir with DPF additiveA hose with a coupling which goes in and out of the additive tank is located on the left rear of the additive tank. It is through this hose to fill the tank of additive.

This pan is held by a screw in the wheel arch, a 10mm nut and, on the front, by a quarter-turn clip. Turn this clip, to raise a small slat in the middle of the clip.
  • Detach the hose located on the rear of the tank of additive through the left rear wheel arch
  • Place the small connector of the kit at the end of the hose from the tank. This will be used to connect the filling hose.
  • Tutorial 407 HDI - Fill the reservoir with DPF additiveHang the recovery tank into his net with hook (for example: to the additive tank metal housing).
  • Place tube recovery tank released by the stalled hose nozzle. Drop the other end of the tube into the recovery tank.
  • Place the stopper with tap on the additive container

  • Tutorial 407 HDI - Fill the reservoir with DPF additiveHold the bottle height (at the level of the door handle) the upside
  • Open the plug valve to fill the tank of additive
  • When the level is done, the additive spring through the tube's recovery. Then close the valve.
  • If your additive tank was nearly empty, the can of 3 liter will fully enter the tank.
  • Tutorial 407 HDI - Fill the reservoir with DPF additiveBefore you detach the charge hose, lift the tank fill hose. It is a form of trap and will be completed without it. Without this, you will put Cerium on your fingers at the time of the disconnect.
  • Remove the hose from the hose fill and reconnect the hose to the tank.
  • Replace the left rear wheel
  • Replace the car on the ground

This operation requires about 30 minutes. Don't forget to throw cans into a dumpster of recycling for toxic products. I'm not sure that the dealer who sold you the additive is bound to resume empty cans. Think to ask at the time of purchase.

Reset the calculator of additive

After completing the additive tank, should be reported to the conversion calculator using diagnostic Peugeot suitcase.

I would not say how to do it in this article for two reasons:

  1. You need a fairly recent diagnostic Peugeot suitcase and this is not the case of the majority of people visiting this site.
  2. During our intervention, resetting the calculator was groped and therefore does not deserve to be described here.

If you know the recommended method to reset the conversion calculator, leave a comment. I'm interested.

To be quiet, plan to pass the bag by your garage. Just think of ask the tariff before refueling of ceria.

Change or clean the particulate filter

Despite the periodic regeneration process, the DPF happens to become clogged over time. This can also be the case if you rode without additives. You then must change the DPF. You will then do a standard exchange and you will find that your new DPF is as old as the old air. This is because your new DPF is an old DPF that have just been cleaned.

Cleaning/replacement of the DPF shall normally be carried out at the same time as the filling of the reservoir of additive. The problem is that the accumulated residue are very toxic (even carcinogenic). The cleaning of the FAP should normally be carried out by a body of official reprocessing.

The DPF high pressure jet cleaning

For this type of cleaning, the DPF must be deposited and then disassembled (clamp). Parts of the DPF are then passed to the jet high pressure cleaner. This cleaning should obviously be done with gloves, glasses and mask. The water must be recovered in order to be recycled specifically for this type of pollutant.

FYI, I do not think that washing stations are able to receive this kind of pollutant (but rather a mixture of SOAP, dust and pigeon Booger).

Some advise to change the pre and post DPF pressure sensors at the same time as the DPF himself. I see no interest. If one of these sensors breaks afterwards, you do change at this time.

Cause a regeneration

If you can not change or clean the DPF, you can cause a good regeneration. Prior to this, refuel Diesel.

The automatic regeneration of DPF can be caused in 2 ways. In 2 cases, it must first ensure that the vicinity of the exhaust does not contain a corrupted item that would make it dangerous to the rise in temperature.

Regeneration triggered with the suitcase of diagnostic

Vehicle stationary, regeneration is provoquable with the suitcase of diagnostic. The engine will turn almost at bottom for about 15 minutes to burn off the particles of the DPF.

Induced automatic regeneration

Vehicle riding, regeneration append if the vehicle perceives that it is in good condition to make. To make him understand, drive at very high engine speed for 20 minutes. No need to go fast. What counts is the RPM. So, you can stay almost at the top of 2nd gear. This treatment raises the DPF in temperature and the car took the opportunity to trigger the regeneration. You can detect it by checking if the defrosting of mirrors is forced. Heat the motor at average temperature before forcing to avoid problems. Caution, check the level of additive before forcing a regeneration. Without this, a lack of additive could clog the DPF and cause big damage on your engine.

Small diesel full consume more

I told you above that the additive is consumed as the kilometres; This is not totally true. Necessary for the DPF additive is added into the tank whenever you fill. To detect this instant, the additive tank uses a sensor that detects small magnets on the side of the fuel cap.

The problem is that the amount of additive added is not calculated according to the quantity of fuel added in full. It is not proportional. So more you made small fill, more often you open fuel cap and more additive is added.

Moral: If you often make small diesel full, you go overconsumption of the additive.

Conclusion

Summing up, one could say that the DPF is used to store a part of the pollution in the filter in order to release it during regeneration. Moreover this system consumes a dangerous and polluting additive. This mechanism, like all others, must be manufactured and will become a waste with recycling requires special precautions that nothing guaranteed that they will be well taken.

If I were paranoid, I would say that the particle filter can pollute less at the time of the approval and the pollution control. On the other hand, throughout the lifetime of the vehicle, the ecological balance of the system must be much less interesting than it sounds.

Side ecology, I am moderately convinced of the interest. On the other hand on the side of economic, I understand the interest. A few years ago the price of full of ceria with exchange DPF could be charged € 500. Recently, I have seen full of additive and change of invoice FAP €1200. Economically, it is therefore interesting but not for the motorist.

Finally, you should know that the DPF technology is evolving. If you have any comments or news to report, leave a comment. I would put the article up-to-date.

Thanks man, I like your words.you are 100% right, I have a problem with my partner 2017, I have change the both FAPs and refilled the additive tank but still full after 35000km, no idea what’s the issue, I’m having a lot of dashboard alerts, antipollution problem, FAP plugged …. I pared in the garage as no one knows the issue
