Tutorial: Change the pulley and belt accessories (Renault Espace 4 2.2 L DCI)
This tutorial will explain how to change the belt of accessories on an engine 2.2 L DCI Renault Espace 4. In this speech, I speak specifically of the accessories belt pulley because that is a pulley Damper. This pulley will be also changed as it may cause a serious failure on this engine.
What is a pulley Damper?
A Damper pulley is a pulley that is able to absorb the shocks coming from his belt. It is composed of a core and a metal Crown connected by a plastic body. This is the principle of silent block adapted to the pulley. This mechanism is useful when the belt-driven element with resistance which can vary greatly.
In our case, this pulley Damper is the crankshaft pulley causing the belt to Accessories. On some engines, accessories can cause strong enough bursts of resistance. It is particularly the case of the clim when it starts or alternator if high consumption. Pulley Damper to protect the motor of these leaps.
Normally, the pulley Damper is to change with the distribution. If this is not done, the plastic of the pulley body likely to break, causing extensive damage. In addition, this break may cause the loss of power steering and alternator, which complicates or then prevents the movement of the vehicle.
You can check the condition of the pulley by looking through the small holes on the side of the body of the pulley. You will see the plastic body and its state of wear. This control is not necessarily easy so it is better to change it to the change in the distribution.
Access belt accessories
- Mount the front of the vehicle on stands
- Remove the right front wheel
- Remove the plastic shield under engine
- Fold the front part of the passage from front right wheel. It is made to bend half dismantled. Secure this part to the shock absorber to prevent it gene.
- Remove the side casing of the crankshaft pulley
- Drop the nose of spar aluminum with its support
Remove the pulley and belt accessories
- Remove the roller roller. This releases the belt accessories. The best would be to relax and then lock the tensioner, but unmount the roller works as well.
- Remove the accessories belt.
- Remove the idler pulley.
- Remove the pulley Damper.
- Observe the pulley Damper if it is broken like ours. We can see the plastic body to cushion the leaps of resistance of the belt. Also note the notches on the side of the pulley to observe the State of the plastic.
Preparation of parts
The parts needed are the pulley and belt accessories as well as roller idler and tensioner. No preparation is required. It must just be careful to not remove the locking peg of blocking of the idler.
Rest the pulley and belt accessories
- Replace the idler leaving freelance that blocks it.
- Replace roller roller.
- Replace the new pulley of accessories.
- Hang the belt to the pulley on the power steering pump
- Pass the front loop of the belt under the roller roller
- Pass the back loop of the belt under the pulley Damper
- Pass the belt onto the idler yet cottoned.
- Check that all the grooves of the belt are well retracted on the pulleys
- Tighten the idler with a tool House or a good key to eye deported
- Remove the locking peg of the idler with pliers. She released herself.
- Gently release the idler. Attention, it is more blocked by the peg.
Tool House to tighten the idler
The space between the idler pulley and the engine compartment is approximately 4cm. Therefore, you cannot tighten the roller using a ratchet or a torque wrench. So, you'll need either a remote key to eye, either you make a tool House.
In our case, this tool was made with an iron blade and Socket 6 pans. The iron blade was first drilled in order to win in thickness then the socket was soldered on the blade. Welding was passed to the Tower in order to win even in thickness. The tool will be retained as well as the peg of timing which will be reused for blocking an already mounted roller.
Remount the ancillary parts
- Replace the nose of spar aluminum with its support. Place all loosely nothing because he can play on its fixing points. Then tighten the fasteners.
- Replace the side casing of crankshaft pulley.
- Re-attach the front of right front wheel.
- Replace the shield plastic under the engine.
- Replace the right front wheel.
- Replace the car to the ground.
That’s clear as mud !
