Tutorial: Change the clutch (Peugeot 306 1.9L D – XUD engine)
This tutorial details how to change the clutch on a 306 1.9 L D. Most maintenance on a car are to change a piece whose wear is provided, necessary or inevitable. This concerns for instance all filters, brake pads and brake discs, shock absorbers, belts or even gaskets spy. Among the pieces of this type, the clutch seems to be that the change is more complicated.
Check the clutch
To check the status of the clutch, follow the method described in the previous tutorial change clutch cable.
Drop the gearbox
The clutch can be accessed after removing the gearbox.
This is the reason why change a clutch is a big head.
To remove the gearbox, follow the removal in the previous tutorial changing the gearbox on a 306 1.9 L D.
Drop the clutch
To remove the clutch then simply unscrew the 6 screws. Be careful to not make you fall on your feet.
Remember also to remove the clutch stopper which is inserted on the primary shaft of the gearbox. This stop looks like a ring and is fixed on the range of the clutch to the gearbox control.
Preparation before replacing the clutch
A clutch kit generally consists of the following elements:
- clutch mechanism
- clutch stop: fixed on the main shaft of the range of control box.
- Locator: tool resembling a tube and to center the disc of the clutch during the installation mechanism. This tool is not always delivered with the clutch but at Valeo is almost systematic.
Before reassembling, make sure the splines of the new clutch match the axis of the gearbox. To do this, enter the clutch on the axis of the box disc. If it does not fit, it is not good! If you remember at this time, I remind you that you come just to remove the gearbox. You will therefore be allowed to swear like a trooper.
Before replacing the clutch, clean a bit of driving motor to fine sandpaper to the level of the surface of contact with the clutch.
Install the clutch
- Assemble the clutch mechanism then lay on the flywheel.
- Use the locator provided with the clutch mechanism for Center the disc on the rest of the clutch mechanism. Apply you for centering as it is essential. Check that it does not move throughout the installation of the clutch. If the clutch is incorrectly centered you can simply rest the gearbox.
- Then place the screws of the clutch and then verify that the disk is always centered.
- Tighten the mounting screws to the ratchet. You will see the fins sticking slightly and approaching a little of the axis that you shake these screws.
- Then tighten the screws with the screwdriver to hit. Measurement of the clamping and mark the screws. This will prevent to forget one.
- Remove the Locator.
Install the clutch stop
- Grease the primary axis of the Belleville or high temperature grease.
- Lubricate the clutch with the same grease stop. Put a little on the surrondings of the arbor hole and a good package on the clutch fork clips.
- Enter the stop on the primary axis until you hear the clip on the range of control.
- Finally you can put a little oil on the ends of the axis of the clutch to the gearbox control.
Clutch pushed on 1.9 L D / tire on 1.9 L TD
The clutches of the 1.9 L D and TD engines are different and that impacted strongly the installation/removal of the gearbox.
- On D, the clutch is "pushed". The clutch stop is clipped range of command and slide on the main shaft box. The gearbox is therefore independent of the clutch and removal/reassembly of box is only "quite complicated"
- On the Turbo D, the clutch says "pulled". The clutch stop is attached to the strips of the mechanism. The range of clutch control is located behind the stop to pull it. This makes the solidarity gearbox of the clutch mechanism and makes removal/reassembly of the truly taken gearbox's head.
- For removal, need to remove the threaded rod located on the axis of the clutch rod, on top of the gearbox. This allows to remove the control rod and rotate a bit more the axis of order and so unblock the range.
- Rest the box, to set the range at 60 ° so that it is just behind the stop at the point where you push the box on the motor. It will be very difficult to achieve that based the box in the engine compartment. For the 1.9 L TD, it is strongly advisable to unmont the set engine + box in order to work.
Remount the gearbox
For reassembly of the gearbox, follow the is based on the previous tutorial changing the gearbox on a 306 1.9 L D.
Conclusion: The tree which hides the forest
In the end you see that change the clutch is fast enough. On the other hand, access to the clutch is very difficult since it requires to access and unmount the gearbox. This intervention will therefore require time, energy, a good tool and above all experience.
